Meiosis underlies the process of sexual reproduction, genetic inheritance and genome evolution.

Such fascinating and interconnected processes develop in the germ line when cells differentiate and generate haploid gametes through the meiotic divisions. The molecular and cellular processes that allow the proper transmission of the genetic information from one generation to the other are complex and several are unique to meiotic cells in particular the steps allowing the diploid to haploid transition. These steps involve specific regulations of the meiotic divisions and of chromosome segregation. The meiotic cell has a specialized program to connect homologous chromosomes, to organize the sister chromatids and centromeres and to proceed through the cell cycle. As these processes are at the basis of sexual reproduction, they are evolutionary conserved and approaches in many different model organisms have shown that several key proteins involved are conserved.

In this workshop, we will provide a unique opportunity to researchers working on various model organisms to exchange their ideas and research projects. The meeting will specifically provide the opportunity to students and postdocs to communicate their results and discuss with leaders in the field. The major advances in the field will also be provided by four keynote speakers. All the other talks will be from students and postdocs.

About the Workshop:

The piRNA pathway is an RNA-silencing pathway involving small non-coding RNAs and specific Argonaute proteins, the PIWI proteins. This pathway was discovered a decade ago as a defense mechanism against transposons. The field is progressing rapidly and in recent years, studies on piRNAs have broadened from transposable element regulation to post-transcriptional gene regulation, roles in stem cell biology, and in somatic tissues and cancer biology. The aim of this EMBO Workshop is to discuss the latest findings on all the different aspects of piRNA biology, and thus to cover the entire field. There will be a particular focus to support scientists in early career stages to foster discussions and collaborations. This workshop is the second of the EMBO Workshop series specifically dedicated to piRNA biology.

Topics include:

  • piRNA biogenesis
  • piRNAs/PIWI proteins in genome defense
  • epigenetic regulation
  • regulation of endogenous gene expression programs
  • stem cell biology
  • genome rearrangements
  • somatic tissues and cancer
